The Economic Policy Institute recently published a report on the prevalence and magnitude of minimum wage theft in the 10 most populous US states. The study found that minimum wage violations, when workers are paid below the hourly minimum wage rate, gravely impact low-paid workers and their communities. The EPI concludes that “if the findings for these states are representative for the rest of the country, they suggest that the total wages stolen from workers due to minimum wage violations exceed $15 billion each year”.

Minimum wage violations are one form of wage theft. Others include overtime violations, off-the-clock violations, meal break violations, pay stubs and illegal deductions, tipped minimum wage violations, and employee misclassification violations.
